Tom Waits on Art

Jim Jarmusch once told me fast, cheap and good…pick two. If it’s fast and cheap it won’t be good. If it’s cheap and good it won’t be fast. If it’s fast and good it won’t be cheap. Fast, cheap and good…pick two words to live by.

Solo Collective announces new project with video promo

The Solo Collective is now in its tenth year of developing original Canadian work, bless them. Co-Artistic Directors Aaron Bushkowsky, Rachel Peake and Johnna Wright dropped the following video on their blog to announce the upcoming The Project, which opens November 4 at Performance Works. It looks like a theatrical presentation about a Hollywood company ineptly making a documentary about starvation in Africa. This is an adorable Lindsey Angell playing a self-centered LA dum-dum. Her advice on choosing Tequila is priceless…

Gift of Screws cast conversations: Steve Park

Please meet one of my very favourite humans. Steve is utterly devoted to the life and craft of acting, and I cannot wait to see him in this play, in a role that I think is probably one of the most challenging characters I have ever read off the page. In addition to being his friend, I’m also a fan, please come down to the show sometime in the next two weeks to find out why. Everything you need to know about how to get there is here.

Dual Minds’ much-anticipated Any Night opens here next week

The dynamic duo behind Dual Minds are getting set to launch the Vancouver premiere of their new production Any Night at the new Culture Lab at the Cultch, launching its new season. Daniel Arnold and Medina Hahn are two of my absolute favourite theatre artists in town, they are wonderful actors and humans, and began Dual Minds with the mandate to create and produce their own original work.

They met in 2000 at the University of Alberta and created their first piece, Tuesdays and Sundays, to showcase their talents, which turned into such a great success they toured it around the world for seven years straight. Any Night is their sophomore effort, and has received rave reviews from its showing at Summerworks last year and from The Belfry in Victoria earlier this year. They’ve tweaked the script a bit in the interim and are ready to show it to their home town audience.

It’s showing concurrently with my play Gift of Screws, but there’s no way I’m going to miss this one. Somehow. Here’s Daniel and Medina talking about the piece, and the promo video for it. Have a look-see…
